Sometimes a single conversation can change the direction of your life.
As I recently followed Pattie Baker’s latest WWOOFing adventure in Ireland through her Instagram posts, I found myself reflecting on a podcast interview we recorded a few years ago. At the time, I thought I was simply interviewing an interesting guest who had embarked on an extraordinary WWOOFing journey across America.
What I didn’t realize was that this conversation would spark a friendship, inspire my own international farm adventures, and remind me time and again of one powerful message:
Trust the Journey.
Today, I wanted to revisit and re-share the episode that started it all.
The First Time I Met Pattie Baker
I first learned about Pattie through another podcast guest who suggested I read her book and hear her story. By the time we sat down for our interview, I had already been captivated by her experiences traveling across the United States through WWOOF (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms).
From the very first few minutes of our conversation, I knew there was something special about Pattie.
She spoke about hope, farming, community, travel, and life with a perspective that felt both grounded and adventurous. One of the first questions I asked her was whether she felt hopeful about the future.
Her answer has stayed with me ever since:
“I feel hope every single day because every single day, if I start it with that attitude and that belief, it manifests.”
As someone deeply involved in agriculture, community building, and storytelling, that sentiment resonated with me immediately.
More Than a WWOOFing Story
At first glance, Pattie’s story is about WWOOFing—a program that connects volunteers with organic farms around the world.
But what struck me most during our conversation wasn’t simply the farms she visited.
It was her willingness to embrace uncertainty.
After preparing to join the Peace Corps and having those plans derailed by the pandemic, Pattie found herself at a crossroads. Rather than giving up on her desire to learn, serve, and connect with people through agriculture, she created an entirely new path.
That path led her across America, working on farms, meeting strangers, and discovering communities connected by food, sustainability, and shared purpose.
As Pattie explained:
“I wanted to go see for myself. I wanted to understand it better. I wanted to learn with the hopes that maybe I could be helpful.”
That mindset perfectly captures why agritourism, WWOOFing, and experiential learning are so powerful. They aren’t simply about travel. They are about connection.
A Friendship Rooted in Agriculture and Adventure
What began as an interview quickly evolved into something more.
Over the years, Pattie and I have continued sharing our experiences through podcasts, conversations, and collaborative projects.
I’ve had the opportunity to interview Pattie about her WWOOFing experiences in Ireland. She later interviewed me about my own WWOOFing journey in Sicily. More recently, we’ve launched a Farm Journal bonus series documenting my season as Retail Farm Manager at Nourse Farm.
Looking back, it’s remarkable how many opportunities grew from that very first conversation.
The friendship that developed has become one of the unexpected gifts of this podcast journey.
Lessons That Continue to Inspire Me
One quote from Pattie’s book and our conversation especially stood out:
“I was a positive, joy-based person who believed in what other people often considered to be impossible.”
As someone who has spent years working in agriculture, preservation, tourism, education, and community projects, I understood exactly what she meant.
Many of us who work to create positive change encounter resistance. We have ideas that don’t fit neatly into existing systems. We see possibilities where others see obstacles.
Pattie’s story serves as a reminder that innovation often begins with curiosity and courage.
Sometimes the path forward isn’t obvious.
Sometimes it requires trusting yourself enough to take the first step anyway.
Why I’m Sharing This Episode Again
Today, Pattie is once again exploring Ireland through WWOOFing, continuing to live her philosophy of trusting the journey.
Watching her latest adventure unfold reminded me how much this original interview impacted my own life.
It introduced me to a remarkable woman, author, traveler, mother, cyclist, environmental advocate, and friend.
More importantly, it reminded me that some of life’s greatest opportunities arrive disguised as simple conversations.
This episode isn’t just the story of Pattie’s first WWOOFing adventure.
It’s the story of saying yes to possibility.
It’s the story of finding community through agriculture.
And for me, it’s the story of a friendship that continues to inspire me every day.
If you’ve ever dreamed about WWOOFing, agritourism, farm travel, sustainable agriculture, or simply creating a life that feels more aligned with your values, I encourage you to listen to this conversation.
You never know where one conversation might lead.
And as Pattie would say:
Trust the Journey.
